The Hotel Gutkowski is a charming boutique hotel located in Ortygia, right in the heart of the old centre of Syracuse (Italian: Siracusa). Ortygia is the home of many important historical landmarks of Syracuse, including the beautiful Piazza del Duomo, Piazza Archimede and Apollo’s Temple, which is one of the most important ancient Greek monuments in Sicily. In Ortygia, you can find a large range of options with regards to food & shopping. Here, pizza and seafood are indeed a must and can be enjoyed either in one of the many restaurants right in front of the sea or hidden inside Syracuse’s small ancient streets. A number of swimming spots are also accessible in Ortygia, at about 5 minutes walking distance from our small boutique hotel. The Hotel Gutkowski consists of two beautiful buildings dated from the 19th century, where local fishermen and craftsmen used to live. Both buildings have been completely renovated in a contemporary style, yet remain respectful of the buildings’ original concept, retaining all its external aspects (the classic façade) as well as many internal aspects (soaring ceilings). The materials used in the hotel include wood, stone, cement and lime, and the colors range from white, beige, dark, light grey, earthy greens, oxide reds, yellows and periwinkle blue. The special character of the hotel consists of its furnishings, including traditional Sicilian furniture mixed with modern design objects. Some of our furniture has been designed and made by us, while other objects are modern pieces, antique or design pieces. The common spaces (breakfast room, reception, terraces, lounging room) are furnished with traditional or recycled pieces and furniture that have been especially thought of and designed to represent the pleasure and art of hospitality. The Hotel Gutkowski features two enchanting terraces with direct view on the Ionian Sea. These are great relaxing places hidden on the rooftops of Syracuse where you can read in tranquility or simply contemplate the magnificent view. In the evening, you do as Italians do it, by starting with an “aperitivo” and continuing later on with a dinner at the restaurant, located at the ground level of the Hotel (serving in & outdoors). The restaurant presents interpretations of traditional Sicilian cuisine with a lighter, more modern cooking method. Among the other services, the Hotel Gutkowski provides a rich buffet breakfast prepared with organic seasonal Sicilian products, and charming indoor lounge areas where you can consult Sicily travelling guides, historical books or spend your time reading a novel. Our hotel has been awarded the 2015 TripAdvisor Certificate of Excellence.

The old town is a maze of winding streets and small piazzas crammed on to the tiny island of Ortigia. It’s here you’ll find the low-key Hotel Gutkowski, which has simple, stylish rooms and a charming roof terrace where breakfast is served.

This is one of the best hotels I have ever stayed at. The bed was so comfortable. I could have stayed in there forever. The views were so amazing. I can’t even describe them. It was also in a great location right on the coast and within walking distance to everything and close to the bridge to the mainland of the island.

Hotel Gutkowski is small, elegant and simple, on the seafront.

Along its seaward side are fishermen’s houses, some weatherbeaten, others restored, like Hotel Gutkowski. It is welcoming and appealing in its simplicity: light rooms, salvaged furniture; and my bedroom has one of those little balconies you see old ladies sitting on, looking out to sea. Once the day-trippers have departed, to be staying the night here feels like a privilege.

Head for the lovely powder-blue upmarket guesthouse Hotel Gutkowski, which is still my favourite place to stay in old Siracusa.

The secret is out: Hotel Gutkowski is the best bargain in ancient, seaside Siracusa…Your room rate includes one of the best continental breakfasts in Siracusa, with fresh-squeezed juices, homemade jams and pastries, and organic fruit.

Gutkowski definitely has something special. Perhaps this magic is partly due to its name, which comes from the Polish grandfather of the owner Paola, a real traveller. Every day at 5pm during summer, granita is offered for free on a big terrace facing the sea. The breakfast features delicious local and organic products, such as orange juice in the winter and almond milk and granitas in the summer.
